Sorry You Are On Mute

What is mindfulness? For several years, I asked the same question. In fact, I was surprised the term “mindfulness” existed. Mindfulness is being aware, being present in the moment, and understanding one’s own thoughts and behaviors. Then, I wondered why mindfulness was essential. As time went on, I realized that mindfulness is important because I can only control myself, not others. I learned how I choose to react, and what I say in times of discomfort or moments of joy is owned by me. This month’s topic on the podcast is Corporate Women Speak about Mindfulness in the Workplace. The discussions offer relatable guidance since many women feel they should’ve been nominated for a Grammy after their workday or a Tony following a meeting.

My Story

When I was 20, I worked temporarily at a local hospital in Gary, Indiana. At the time, I was glad to be working, able to get my hair done, and buy what I wanted. I went to the said job with no expectations, except for the party after my workday. I had yet to learn what code-switching was and when to turn it on, how to approach unpleasantries amongst co-workers, or where to go for advice. While working that summer, I encountered an older woman who had worked in her role for more than 30 years; she was very opinionated about “this generation” and our work ethic. She often made subtle comments I perceived as offensive, but I kept my eye on the prize, 5 o’clock, and party time. However, one day, this woman made a comment that struck a nerve.

The Response

So, I emailed a friend in the office to vent about this woman. Unbeknown to me, after hitting send, the email went to the entire office. Immediately, my beeper went off, 9-1-1, from my friend in the office. That was our signal to meet me by the restroom. I got up because I was ready, Chile; I would say my piece. Instead, I walked into the “Why did you send an email about “this lady” to the entire office? Girl, she has been here a long time. Why?!”

The Consequence

Immediately, I was scared, my heartbeat increased, and my thoughts began to race. I didn’t send the email to my friend but to the entire department, including the woman who made the comments and the department head. In a full-blown panic, I walk back to my desk. In minutes, I received a call from the department head to come to his office. As soon as I enter and sit, he says, “You are fired.” He did not look up from the document he was reading or say goodbye.

The Outcome

Corporate women speaking about mindfulness in the workplace is essential. I wish I had someone to guide me at 20. Moreover, I wish I had guidance on how to handle my thoughts and feelings in the workplace. Furthermore, as I progressed in my career, I wanted someone to inform me that the expectations I set for myself should include thinking about me! That how I show up is a choice and that mindfulness honors my feelings and emotions, ultimately controlling how I respond to adversity in the workplace.

The May 2023 podcast edition: Corporate Women Speak: Maintaining Personal Empowerment and Mindfulness in the Workplace is for that girl, who had no one to guide to her, and for young adults or anyone navigating their workplace.

Hello May!

By now, Q2 is in full swing, and MTO KPIs can be challenging to maintain despite intentionality. It is not uncommon to say, “I’ll get to it later,” then three weeks later, one wonders where the time has gone without recalibrating or reestablishing MTO KPIs. One thing is guaranteed, and that stress remains while pushing through, getting it done, or handling it. In this blog post, I will discuss cortisol, the stress hormone, and the effects of constant stress on the body and offer aromatic solutions. What is Cortisol? Cortisol and adrenaline are stress hormones produced in the adrenal glands. Both hormones help with severe stress, such as swerving to avoid striking an animal or suddenly slamming on your brakes in traffic to avoid an accident. The release of the stress hormone cortisol and its companion adrenaline activates fight-or-flight, heightening instinct, and survival. The release of cortisol should be temporary, and not lingering for days. Anger, chronic fear, or resentment extend the duration of the cortisol for longer periods, which can affect immunity, cause weight gain, digestive issues, affecting the sleep, or possibly unknowingly invite in poor health. The Adrenal Glands The adrenal glands are located above the kidneys. The adrenals work hard to produce cortisol and can become exhausted trying to keep up. As a result, someone can experience adrenal fatigue or exhaustion. Recalibrate Find your joy. One of many solutions is essential oils that bring joy, uplift, ground, and calm nerves, to reduce stress. They are commonly referred to as adaptogen essential oils. I’ve found that being aware of my most stressful times of the day and using essential oils helps me redirect and offer a brain break to control negative thoughts or reactions. Essential Oils Recommendations to Reduce Cortisol Vetiver, Vetiveria zizanoides , has a deep and earthy scent. It comes from the root of a weeping grass. It has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and nervine properties that promote relief of chronic stress, grounding, and immunity and is a circulatory stimulant. May Chang, Litsea cubeba , is a fruit with a lemony scent and herbaceous undertones. The essential oil has antispasmodic, anti-depressive, and diuretic properties that improve mental fatigue and brain fog, uplift, and help manage stress. Ylang Ylang, Cananga odorata , is a powdery and sweet floral. The essential oil comes from a tropical tree. It has aphrodisiac (self-love), anti-inflammatory, and cardiotonic properties that regulate a stirred-up nervous system. Eucalyptus, Eucalyptus radiata , a camphoraceous evergreen tree with a sweet scent, has many species. The essential oil has antispasmodic, febrifuge, and stimulant properties that help strengthen the immune system. MTO Featured Product MTO Body Butter is a nourishing moisturizer formulated with adaptogen essential oils. KPIs are in full effect, and with that, we still must manage our stress, our expectations for ourselves, and the expectations of others. It sounds logical and straightforward, really, but is it? In this post, I will offer on-the-go aromatics and affirmation prompts for you to consider throughout your day.
